Description
Audubon called this the Buff-breasted Merganser or Goosander. He encountered this bird, now called the Common Merganser, in Texas in April 1837. He had seen a large flock in Galveston Bay.
In the background of the work, Audubon illustrated a view of Cohoes Falls (Mohawk for “Canoe Falls”) in New York. It is a waterfall on the Mohawk River, also called “the great falls of the Mohawk”.
