Description
Audubon witnessed this behavior of snakes stealing eggs and the young of Mockingbird nests. He also observed the mobbing behavior of Mockingbirds against the snakes, sometimes successfully driving them off.
Audubon noted that Mockingbirds “are always ready not only to defend themselves vigorously and with undaunted courage, but to meet the agressor half way, and force him to abandon his intention”.
The Northern Mockingbird is a popular state bird, and holds that title in Arkansas, Florida, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Texas.
Painted on a Florda Jessamine climbing shrub (also called a Carolina Jessamine or Yellow Jessamine).
